Iran: Afkari Brothers Transferred to Punitive Ward

Iran Human Rights (IHR); September 5, 2020: Navid Afkari, one of the defendants in the August 2018 protests case, who is on death row, was transferred to the "Ebrat" (determent) ward, and his brothers and co-defendants, Habib and Vahid Afkari were transferred to the "Ershad" (guidance) ward of Adelabad Prison in Shiraz. The "Ebrat" ward is one of the punitive wards of the prison. The Afkari family have not been permitted to visit their three imprisoned children.

According to Iran Human Rights, Navid Afkari, a political prisoner on death row, was transferred to the “Ebrat” ward of Adelabad Prison in Shiraz on Thursday night, 3rd September. The transfer was apparently made in response to the mass Twitter storm that led to widespread support from the political and sports world as well as the ensuing news coverage.

An informed source told IHR: “The ‘ebrat’ ward is one of the dirtiest wards in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz and is located in the basement of the prison. The ward has no facilities and prisoners who are sent to the ward as punishment have their clothes removed from them.”

“The transfer took place in the presence of the prison guard and the Afkari family were not permitted to visit their children that day,” the source added.

Navid Afkari is one of the defendants in the August 2018 protests who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) by the Revolutionary Court on charges of being the “principal in a murder” and sentenced to death on charges of "moharebeh" (waging war against God). His brother, Vahid Afkari, was also sentenced to 25 years in prison for complicity in the murder. The two brothers told the court that all their confessions were false and had been obtained under torture. However, the rulings were upheld by the Supreme Court and their request for a retrial was rejected.

In the same case, their other brother, Habib Afkari, along with his friend Saeed Arjmand, were also sentenced to prison on charges of "forming an illegal group" with Navid and Vahid.

Habib and Vahid Afkari were also transferred to the "Ershad" ward of Adelabad Prison in Shiraz on Thursday night.
