Vahid Tabatabaei Executed for Murder in Rajai Shahr Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); March 11, 2022: Vahid Tabatabaei who was sentenced to qisas for murder, has been executed in Rajai Shahr Prison, increasing the number of people executed at the prison that day to two.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on the morning of March 2. His identity has been established as 39-year-old Seyed Vahid Tabatabaei, a Varamin native who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Vahid Tabatabaei was arrested for murder charges seven years ago. He had a six-month-old baby at the time of his arrest. The family of his victim were supposed to consent for him not to be executed when he was transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution on Tuesday (March 8), they waited until 6.30 am for the consent to come through, but it didn’t and he was executed.”

Iran Human Rights previously reported the execution of Vahid Mousavi at the prison on that day, which now raises the number of executions to two.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter and no grading, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
