Iran Human Rights (IHR); July 14, 2020: Iranian Twitter users have made the hashtag "#اعدام_نکنید" (stop executions) trend globally.
As execution rates in Iran continue to rise and the death sentences of three protesters arrested in the nationwide November 2019 demonstrations was upheld by the Supreme Court, Iranians have taken to Twitter to make their voices heard by the world and Islamic Republic’s leaders by making the hashtag "#اعدام_نکنید" (stop executions) trend globally.
The death sentences of the three protestors, Amirhossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi, who are being held at the Greater Tehran Prison (Fashafuyeh), was upheld on July 10 by the Supreme Court.
Iran Human Rights (IHR) has seen an increase in the number of executions as well as passing down unprecedented sentences, including death sentence for repeated alcohol consumption and execution by a firing squad, indicate that the government’s use of the death penalty is a recourse to control the already inflamed social climate.
Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of IHR, tweeted: "Through executions and creating a climate of fear, the Islamic Republic is trying to cover up its inability to deal with the social, political and economic problems it has created itself. Execution is not the solution to Iran's problems. # اعدام_نکنید»
According to the Statistics Department of Iran Human Rights, at least 13 people have been executed in the past 14 days. In the first six months of 2020, the Islamic Republic has executed 123 people, a growth of 10% compared to the same period last year.
