Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); 23 August 2026: State media announced the execution of Majid Adineh, a protester arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests in Karaj, at an undisclosed location. Majid is the 29th individual to be executed in connection with the January protests since 19 March. Two “Woman, Life, Freedom” protesters have also been executed during this period.
Hundreds of protesters, including over 70 in Isfahan alone, are currently facing the death penalty in Iran. IHRNGO continues to raise the alarm over the escalation of political prisoner executions.
According to the judiciary’s Mizan News Agency, Majid Adineh was hanged at an undisclosed location on 23 August 2026. He was arrested with an unnamed individual late on the evening of 9 January in Karaj, Alborz province, and accused of participating in the Karaj protests on 8 and 9 January. IHRNGO has established the location of his execution as Karaj Penitentiary (Central Prison). A video of Majid's forced 'confession' in court was broadcast following the announcement of his execution.
Majid was accused of “operational action in favour of hostile groups, the Zionist regime and the United States; moharebeh (enmity against God) through intentional arson; assembly and collusion with intent to commit crimes against the internal security of the country; propaganda activity against the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran; unauthorised possession of a firearm in the form of a pistol along with three live magazines and 30 rounds; unauthorised possession of two electric stun guns; and unauthorised possession of two canisters of tear gas spray.”
Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death and confiscation of all property on charges of "operational action in favour of the Zionist regime, the United States and hostile groups under Article 1 of the Law Intensifying Punishments for Espionage and Co-operation with the Zionist Regime and Hostile Countries Against National Security and Interests.”
Per the state report, “technical and forensic examinations established that the weapon seized from him had been fired between 8 and 9 January,” a claim previously made in the case of Mehdi Khanaki.
No independent information is available about Majid Adineh’s case.
IHRNGO has documented the systemic use of torture and the violations of due process and fair trial rights in death penalty cases. On 16 May, the organisation warned that the Islamic Republic's judiciary is actively weaponising state-approved lawyers to facilitate and expedite the execution of arrested protesters. Families of death row prisoners are also routinely silenced through threats and coercion to prevent them from speaking out about their loved ones’ cases.
