Protesters Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raisi Hanged in Isfahan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); 5 October 2026: Alireza Sepahi Badjani and Alireza Raisi Hassan Hendouyi, two protesters sentenced to death in Isfahan’s “Alikhani Square” case, were executed in Isfahan Central Prison. Since 19 July, seven protesters, including two Afghan nationals, have been executed in connection with the case, which is marred by due process violations and accounts of torture.

Since 19 March, at least 36 protesters (34 in connection with the January protests and two in connection with the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests) and 13 political prisoners affiliated with banned opposition groups have been executed.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the director of IHRNGO stated: "The weekly executions of protesters continue, while hundreds more have been sentenced to death or face charges carrying the death penalty. This is a continuation of the mass killing of January protesters—first on the streets, now through executions. An immediate halt to all executions must be a central demand of every government maintaining diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic."

According to the lawyers of protester Alireza Sepahi Badjani, he was hanged in Isfahan (Dastgerd) Central Prison on 5 October 2026. Furthermore, per information obtained by IHRNGO, Alireza Raisi Hassan Hendouyi was also executed at the prison on the same day.

Alireza Sepahi’s lawyer reported that his family had been summoned to the prison on 4 October.

The news was later announced by the judiciary’s Mizan News Agency which reported that the two protesters were sentenced to death on charges of “membership in a baghi group (armed rebellion), moharebeh (enmity against God) through drawing a weapon and causing fear, terror, and insecurity, efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth) through acts against the physical integrity of individuals and national security that caused severe disruption to public order and widespread insecurity, incitement to war and bloodshed, and other criminal acts including acting against national security.”

Alireza Sepahi Badjani, 25, and Alireza Raisi Hassan Hendouyi, 21, were arrested in connection with protests in Isfahan’s Alikhani Square on 8 January, where authorities claimed four policemen were killed. According to informed IHRNGO sources, 62 people were arrested in relation to the case and at least a dozen were sentenced to death. IHRNGO has documented the use of physical, sexual and psychological torture to extract self-incriminating confessions from the defendants in the case.

Five defendants in the case were previously executed, with two of them carried out publicly. Erfan Esfandiari and Gol Mohammad Mohammadi were executed at the prison on 19 July,  Alireza Sepahi’s cousin, Abolfazl Sepahi and Amirhossein Safari were publicly hanged in Alikhani Square, the scene of the alleged offences, on 28 July, and Ghaem Hosseini was executed at the prison on 20 August.

On 31 July, IHRNGO reported that Alireza Sepahi was scheduled to be publicly hanged on 28 July which was halted after he suffered a heart attack, warning that Alireza Sepahi, Alireza Raisi and four of their co-defendants were at grave risk of execution. On 2 September, Alireza Sepahi’s lawyer, Shahrzad Shahbazi reported that Branch 39 of the Supreme Court had accepted his appeal and referred the case to a court of equal standing for retrial. However, Branch Two of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court had dismissed the application without a hearing. IHRNGO issued another warning on 12 September after Alireza was transferred to the pre-execution solitary confinement cells of the prison.

On 4 October, defense counsel for Alireza Sepahi published an audio recording in which Alireza recites religious marriage vows via phone to his fiancée, Mahshad Keshani. Both Mahshad and Alireza’s mother, Somayeh Afshar—who was arbitrarily arrested alongside her son on 10 January—are currently serving five-year prison terms.
